- Unitarian Universalism Connection
Safe Passage is an organization dedicated to helping families who live off of the Guatemala City Dump. Youth from five UU congregations in Maine are joining forces to help. Eighteen youth have been fundraising and researching for nearly two years in anticipation of a July 2017 service trip to Safe Passage. Our youth will be engaged in whatever Safe Passage needs, including spending time with the children whose families make their living off of the Guatemala City Dump.
All of the youth have been actively engaged in their individual congregations as well as with one another’s congregations with dinners, raffles, and other fundraisers, and each youth attends two YRUU meetings per month, one with the entire service project group and one with their individual congregations. During these meetings, youth research Guatemala culture, poverty, religion, and more, and participate actively in small group discussions about population needs, cultural sensitivity, what it really means to serve and be helpful, and more.
This is an opportunity for connection across cultures, income classes, races, ages, and faiths. It is an amazing chance for our UU youth to exemplify their principles, serve a population in need, and widen their own horizons.
